The X post from the Argentine news outlet Todo Noticias shares the story of Brandon Renzi, a 21-year-old security guard who cried while working at Lionel Messi’s farewell match with the Argentina national team. Renzi is from Virrey del Pino in La Matanza, near Buenos Aires, and supports Boca Juniors. His parents are separated, and he began working at age 15 to help his mother. His previous jobs included work at a cold-storage facility, a pet-food factory, a rotisserie, and a carpentry shop. Because of money problems, he had never been able to buy a ticket to see Messi play. Two months earlier he was hired by a security company to work the sidelines at the Monumental stadium during the farewell, which drew more than 80,000 people. He ended up only two or three metres from Messi, but his job required him to face the stands and watch for people trying to get onto the field, so he could not turn around and look at the player. He was not allowed to use his phone. He only learned later, from videos, that Messi had passed right behind him and run toward the corner flag. Cameras caught him crying during Messi’s speech. He later said he had waited his whole life to see Messi and that economic hardship had always stopped him. He described the moment as the “cry of an entire nation,” reflecting both Messi’s losses and the World Cup win. After the match he got a tattoo in Messi’s honour and said he simply wanted to thank him and hope he enjoys what he has achieved. He still plays futsal locally as a right winger. The photo in the post shows Renzi in ordinary clothes on one side and in his bright security jacket and cap, visibly emotional, on the other. Replies under the post included suggestions that someone get him a jersey.
