Soybean meal vs canola meal: what's the connection? They're competitors. Both are what's left after crushing oilseeds for oil. Crush soybeans and you get soybean meal; crush canola (rapeseed) and you get canola meal. Both are mainly used as protein ingredients in animal feed. The difference:
Soybean meal: higher protein, the most widely produced oilseed meal in the world, used for pigs, poultry and fish
Canola meal: lower protein, commonly traded around 38% protein in China, generally used more in poultry and aquaculture feed That's why soybean meal usually costs more. When the price gap widens, feed mills use less soybean meal and more canola meal. When it narrows, they switch back. How wide is the gap now? According to Mysteel, at the end of August the spread in China's main markets was 680 to 780 yuan per tonne. In Guangdong, for example, soybean meal was 3,110 yuan per tonne and canola meal 2,420 yuan. It's one reason changes in canola seed imports eventually show up in feed costs. Source: Mysteel
