I was about to board my flight from Copenhagen to Athens when airport security singled me out for an unusually thorough screening. At first, I assumed they would simply inspect some liquid bottles, perhaps remove them from my bag, conduct one more check, and send me on my way. But no. The officer proceeded to empty my entire bag, going through virtually every single item I carried—including my toothbrush, condoms, wallets, and even took out the credit cards and IDs inside my wallet and carefully examined each of them. The entire process took about one hour. At one point, I couldn’t help but ask him, “Do I look like a terrorist to you?” He replied that the screening was “completely random.” Random? Interestingly, I didn’t see a single other passenger subjected to anything remotely comparable. What an extraordinary waste of public resources. The irony is almost beyond satire. European governments have allowed millions of illegals, who historically have been more likely to hijack planes to enter. Yet airport authorities determined to scrutinize every last credit card belonging to a Chinese traveler who entered the country legally with a valid visa. Apparently, examining my wallet is a greater security priority than ensuring effective border controls. I have no objection to reasonable security screening. But when security measures become unnecessarily intrusive, disproportionate, and arbitrary, one has to question whether resources are being allocated intelligently. Europe increasingly has its priorities upside down. No wonder that it’s on way to total destruction.
