New York doesn’t create much wealth of its own. Much of its economy revolves around collecting rents, fees, and commissions. Rather than creating wealth, New York largely profits by taking a cut of the wealth created elsewhere. It’s less a wealth-creation engine than a wealth-extraction machine.
