Before dawn on Oct. 8, a fire broke out at a @yandex data center in Sasovo, about 190 miles southeast of Moscow. Yandex said the site had shut down completely. Before dawn the next day, its data center in Kaluga was hit, and Yandex confirmed that several modules were completely knocked out. Ukrainian defense-tech firm @FirePointUA said its FP-1 long-range drones carried out that strike. Then, before dawn on Oct. 11, Yandex said a drone attack had completely shut down its Vladimir data center. With two cloud zones unavailable, Yandex said its platform was running in emergency mode. Over the month after July 18, Ukrainian drones hit warehouses. Verstka counted at least 22 belonging to Russian online retailer Wildberries. CNews says the Sasovo strike was Russia’s first reported Ukrainian drone attack on a data center. Novaya Gazeta Europe, citing sources, reported disruptions to internal systems at T-Bank, Ozon, and Wildberries. @CloudflareRadar data shows traffic from Yandex’s cloud network averaging about a third below the previous week, starting at 1:30 a.m. Moscow time on Oct. 8. Russia’s nationwide traffic, though, closely tracked the previous week. Through Oct. 10, that measure showed no nationwide blackout. Since late September, Russia has repeatedly struck data centers in Kyiv. Zelensky said Ukraine was mirroring Russia’s attacks on data centers.
