Elon Musk (@elonmusk) told Tesla owners at X Takeover on Oct. 10 that he doesn't know how to make chips. He plans to build his own chip fab anyway. The event was hosted by @teslaownersSV. He says he toured Intel, Samsung and TSMC fabs and didn't really see any custom equipment. His plan for Terafab is to start with conventional equipment, modify it, and then build custom equipment at the choke points. His goal is 10 chip designs a year. Separately, he says it might take quite a few years to figure out how to make chips better than anyone. TSMC Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei was asked about Terafab on the company's April earnings call. He said there are no shortcuts: two to three years to build a new fab, then another one to two years to ramp up. The Chinese-language version of this video went out first, on my Taiwan channels. One of the most-liked early comments on Facebook asked: if I give you the same pots, knives and ingredients as a three-star Michelin restaurant, can you cook the same dishes? A few of those comments are in the video, translated. They are viewer comments, not a survey. Also in this 12-minute video: why Musk says the hand is the hardest part of the Optimus robot, and his four-to-six-week estimate for the first attempt to catch the Starship upper stage. He said the booster has been caught twice. The public record is three.
