(3) Thangka of Maitreya Temples at Basgo Site, Ladakh,17th Century(3) The three Maitreya temples at Basgo were constructed and decorated under the reign of Sengge Namgyal (r. c.1570–1642), the most powerful ruler of the Namgyal Dynasty. The site served as the political and religious heart of the kingdom. By patronizing monumental Maitreya images, the king established Basgo as a major centre for the cult of Maitreya, spreading cultural influence to conquered regions including Guge and Mustang. The conquest of the Guge Kingdom around 1620 marked a turning point in Ladakhi expansion. Following military defeat in Ali in the late 17th century, Ladakh withdrew from Ali. The royal court moved to Leh, cutting off royal patronage for Basgo, and the site gradually declined. Its surviving murals and sculptures are precious relics of Western Himalayan art.
