An online clip shows an eight-wheeled Chinese air-defense vehicle firing a six-barrel gun into the sky. It has been called a “drone killer.” The footage comes from a military program on Chinese state broadcaster CCTV. The vehicle is commonly called the Type 625, and it carries both a gun and missiles. Here are the numbers that have a source. In the name, 6 is for six barrels and 25 is the caliber in millimeters, about an inch. In December 2022, Ta Kung Pao, a pro-Beijing newspaper in Hong Kong, reported an average rate of fire of about 5,000 rounds a minute. That is roughly 83 rounds a second. Army Recognition, a defense news site, lists an effective range of 2.5 kilometers, about 1.5 miles, and an altitude ceiling of about 2 kilometers. The South China Morning Post, reporting on the 2022 Zhuhai air show, said the shell’s fragments have a “killing radius” of 5 to 6 meters. Ta Kung Pao says one version used by China’s People’s Liberation Army has four HN-6B missiles, while the Zhuhai display had eight. The HN-6B comes from a family of shoulder-fired, heat-seeking missiles. Published figures put its maximum range at about 6 kilometers. Some posts online say 17 kilometers. As of Oct. 11, 2026, we found no military or manufacturer source for that figure. Ta Kung Pao says the missiles handle targets 2.5 to 5 kilometers out and the gun handles anything closer. Farther out is a separate system, the HQ-17A. The South China Morning Post puts the range of its export version at 20 kilometers. The PLA fields the Type 625 mainly in medium combined arms brigades. Most of these specifications come from air shows, state media and manufacturers. We found official demonstration and training footage, but no record of combat use and no public third-party test results. Ta Kung Pao lists the system’s intended targets as attack helicopters, cruise missiles, drones and loitering munitions. In September, Taiwan’s Cabinet proposed a supplemental budget that aims to acquire more than 40,000 coastal attack drones in 2027. If those drones are ever used in a fight across the Taiwan Strait, they could face short-range air defenses such as the Type 625.
