The competition in personal AI assistants is taking two different paths: one is to pick the best model for each task; the other is to train models specifically to build the best assistant. Elon Musk recently said Grok Bot can select the most suitable model for a task, including models from Anthropic. Google's Gemini agent is taking a similar approach, calling Gemini or Claude depending on the task. The advantage is clear: you can quickly tap into the strengths of different models. But listen closely to Zuckerberg and Alexandr Wang talk about Muse Wonder, and you'll see Meta is going a step further: building the needs of a personal assistant directly into model design and training. Take Active Memory. It teaches the model to compress context, draw on different sources of memory, and apply information from days, weeks, or even months ago to future tasks. Then there's Active Focus, which helps the model stay focused on its objectives during long-running tasks, adjust its strategy when something goes wrong, and keep moving forward. This also exposes a potential weakness in relying on external models. Grok Bot and Gemini agent can call Opus, but they can't decide what Opus should prioritize in its next training cycle. Anthropic has its own products and training roadmap. It won't naturally optimize its models around another company's assistant experience. Meta, on the other hand, can feed problems discovered through real-world Muse usage directly back into model training, allowing the model and product to evolve together. So the long-term competitive advantage in personal AI assistants may not come from having access to the strongest model today, but from being able to evolve the model alongside the product. That may be Muse's real killer advantage.
