The creator of Clojure just said you're not using AI. AI is using you. Rich Hickey's new essay: an LLM is not a tool, it's automation. A tool you wield with your hands, with continuous feedback. An LLM you just request, and it acts on its own. His analogy: a drive-thru isn't a tool for cooking, it's automation for avoiding cooking. He's half right, and I say that as someone who ships code with these things daily. The half he's right about: when I let the agent run unsupervised for an hour, I'm not wielding anything. I'm hoping. I've felt the atrophy he's warning about, it's real. The half he's wrong about: my best sessions are the tightest feedback loop I've ever had. I read every diff, I challenge the explanation, I run the tests, I reject and retry. That's not avoiding work. That's code review on steroids. So the real line was never tool vs automation. It's whether you're in the loop or out of it. Be honest: when did you last read a full diff instead of skimming it? #AI #coding
