Ten Months you have forty days to live not thirty-eight not forty-two forty ten months it took ten months for them to find it high risk two words on a piece of paper I looked at the doctor then at my husband then at the paper nothing he reached for my hand and held on as if he could keep me here I wanted to ask couldn’t we have found it sooner? was there a day when something could have been done? and did that day pass without anyone knowing? but I said nothing what do you do with forty days? do you still make plans? buy groceries? fold the laundry? put something away for next week? my body answered first my breasts were full it was almost time to feed her my baby ten months old the same ten months it took them to find it she has only just learned to reach for me when she wants to be held she doesn’t know what forty days means she only knows when she’s hungry I am there
