On This Day in History: Many people don’t know how China obtained its permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. Today I’ll take you through a bit of that history. On October 14, 1952, the Battle of Shangganling (also known as the Battle of Triangle Hill), which shocked the world, officially began. The battlefield covered only 3.7 square kilometers—two small hills—yet it became the bloodiest battlefield of the Korean War (War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea). To force China to make concessions, the U.S. launched the ferocious “Operation Showdown.” In just 43 days of fighting, the U.S. and South Korean forces committed more than 60,000 troops and poured over 1.9 million artillery shells and more than 5,000 aerial bombs onto the tiny positions. The shelling was so dense that it reached six rounds per second. Solid rock was blasted apart; the entire hilltop was lowered by two meters, and the ground turned into scorched earth. The enemy possessed absolute superiority in firepower with aircraft, tanks, and heavy artillery. They believed that if the bombardment was intense enough, they could easily seize the positions. But they underestimated the will of the Chinese soldiers. When the surface was blasted flat, the Chinese People’s Volunteers held out inside dark, damp tunnels. Short of water, food, and oxygen, with wounds becoming infected, countless soldiers gritted their teeth and endured the desperate conditions. Throughout the entire campaign, United Nations forces launched more than 900 assaults, all of which were firmly repelled by the Volunteers. The final figures are staggering:
U.S. and South Korean casualties exceeded 25,000,
while Chinese Volunteer casualties were over 11,000. The enemy, who overwhelmingly outgunned us, suffered roughly twice our casualties. On November 25, 1952, the Battle of Shangganling ended in complete victory. This battle completely shattered the arrogance of the U.S. forces, foiled the enemy’s offensive intentions, stabilized the situation on the Korean front, and forced the enemy back to the negotiating table.
