I didn't learn to cook properly until my late thirties. Before that my kitchen career was instant noodles and one brave attempt at scrambled eggs that I still don't talk about. I started with knife skills videos and a lot of burned rice. The turning point was cooking for my parents. My mother supervised like a building inspector. My father said nothing, ate his bowl, then quietly asked if there was more. That "more" did more for my confidence than any compliment ever has. Now I cook most weekends. I'm still slow, still make a mess of the counter. But there's something about feeding people with your own hands that no restaurant can hand you on a plate.
