$100 in August 2006. To buy the same basket today, you'd need $𝟭𝟲𝟰. That's the official CPI-U, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Put another way: today's $100 buys what about $𝟲𝟭 did in 2006. Purchasing power down roughly 𝟯𝟵%. The index: 𝟮𝟬𝟯.𝟵 in August 2006 𝟯𝟯𝟰.𝟵𝟴 in August 2026 That works out to about 𝟮.𝟱% a year. It sounds mild. Compounded for 20 years, it isn't. Two caveats: ↳ CPI-U is a national average basket. Your own inflation can be higher or lower. ↳ These are two August snapshots, not a smooth path. In research, a result means little without a control arm. In money, inflation is one of the controls your savings get compared against. Not investment advice.
