In my grandfather's old photo box, the backs of the prints are covered in pencil: names, dates, the occasional note like "the summer the roof leaked." He labeled everything. I inherited another box from an aunt — no labels at all. Faces smiling at a camera, clearly at some family event, and nobody alive can tell me who half of them are. I held one up at a family dinner. My mother squinted, shook her head. "Could be anyone," she said. That's the thing about memory nobody warns you about: it doesn't fade evenly. The faces stay. The names go first. So now, when I print a photo — which is rare — I write on the back. Just a name and a year. Someone, someday, will be glad I did the boring part.
