The librarian at our neighborhood library has a system nobody asked her to build. She slips a bookmark into returned books with one handwritten line: "the good part starts on page 40," or "skip the middle — the ending earns it." People now come in asking for "the bookmark lady's shelf." She told me she started it because returning a book felt like a conversation ending mid-sentence. I've read three books this year on the strength of her bookmarks alone.
