We've started treating rest like a prize you earn by finishing everything. But everything never finishes. The inbox refills, the list grows a new bottom, the prize keeps moving one more task away. So people take their rest guilty, in scraps, checking their phones through it — which isn't rest at all, just slower work. I've started putting rest on the calendar first, in pen, like a meeting with somebody I respect. Not because I've earned it. The work will happily take every hour I don't defend, and it will never once say thank you.
