In the United States, why do Indians outperform Chinese people in earnings, social status and government positions? Many have asked this question, and the answer lies in a little-known historical backstory. Indians’ biggest advantage when moving to America is their fluent English. They speak it naturally and feel confident drafting reports and emails. Where did this English proficiency come from? Back in colonial times, Britain imposed English as an official language in India. Centuries later, Indians took this language skill to the United States to compete for jobs and seats in power. It is like cashing in on the legacy of colonialism a second time: the British planted the tree, and Indians pick the fruit. Then there is food. Indian cuisine conquered the West with spiced curry dishes. China boasts eight major culinary traditions, yet it loses out to a single spoonful of curry. It is not a loss of flavor, but a loss of cultural discourse power. Chinese communities cannot simply blame others. They are not good at speaking up. They excel at cooking, yet fall short in promotion. This ground must be fought for by themselves.
