Russia’s official narrative ultimately serves to legitimize its warrior-state mentality, imperial ambitions, and aggression, providing justification for authoritarian rule at home and territorial expansion abroad. At the same time, it magnifies genuine problems within Western societies—including immigration challenges, cultural disputes, and declining social trust—and uses them as excuses to claim that the path of liberal democracy has reached a dead end. Western societies, led by the United States, do face real challenges. These include persistently high opioid overdose deaths in the United States, overall fertility rates below replacement level, and ongoing cultural conflicts and declining public trust in some areas. However, these problems can be addressed through elections, open public debate, and policy adjustments within democratic systems. Their existence does not mean that the liberal democratic model itself has failed. Comparative data suggest that Russia faces even more serious challenges of its own. Its suicide rate has been reported at approximately 24 per 100,000 people, higher than that of most Western countries. Russia also bears a particularly heavy burden of alcohol-related disease, while its life expectancy is approximately 74 years, with men living significantly shorter lives than women. Yet Russia’s official narrative often selectively magnifies Western problems while downplaying its own struggles with alcohol abuse, population decline, and governance failures. The foundations of Western democracy—including the rule of law, checks and balances, freedom of speech, and a market economy—have demonstrated resilience and the capacity for self-correction on numerous occasions throughout history. The existence of specific social problems is not, in itself, sufficient grounds to reject the value of an entire civilization or political system. Instead, these problems should serve as a starting point for continued reform, institutional improvement, and democratic self-correction.
