Reward a passion and you'll quietly kill it. In 1973, Lepper, Greene & Nisbett studied kids who already loved to draw. One group was promised a reward for drawing. Another got a surprise reward after. A third got nothing. Days later, in free-play time, the kids who were paid drew the least. The ones who got a surprise reward — or none at all — kept drawing at the same rate. Here's the mechanism: an expected reward reframes "I do this because I love it" into "I do this for the payoff." The moment the payoff stops, so does the action. This is why turning your hobby into a side hustle so often kills the hobby. You didn't lose the passion. You taxed it. Steal these 3 rules: 1. Never pay yourself for something you'd do for free. 2. Reward the finish line, not the daily act. 3. Use payouts to start what you'd avoid — never to fuel what you already crave. The best things in your life should stay unpaid. The moment they become transactional, they become temporary.
