You should be failing 15% of the time. On purpose. In 2019, a team published a paper in Nature Communications with a maddeningly plain title: "The Eighty Five Percent Rule for Optimal Learning." Their finding: humans learn fastest when the task is tuned so we succeed about 85% of the time — and fail the other 15%. Nobody quotes the second half, and it's the useful half. Miss 0%? Your brain stops updating. There's no gap to resolve, so nothing gets encoded. You're just rehearsing what you already know and calling it practice. Miss 50%? You drown in noise — frustrating, formless, and you quit. The magic window is narrow: enough error to teach you, little enough to keep you in the game. So stop treating a clean win streak as proof you're mastering something. Most of the time it just means your difficulty is set too low. The 85/15 rule (steal it): • Nailing almost everything → raise the difficulty. • Flailing and guessing → lower it. • Settle where you miss roughly 1 in 7. Most people don't quit because something is hard. They quit because it's hard in the wrong amount.
