She announced last call at midnight. I ordered one more. She poured two. Jess was 28, tended bar under my building. Rule: no drinks after midnight, no exceptions. That night she looked at my empty glass. "One more. On me. Then I'm locking up." "Can I help you close?" "You can wipe tables. And try not to stare." We closed together — chairs up, bottles lined, neon off. The place felt smaller in the dark. Warmer. "You know," she said, leaning on the bar, "I can tell everything about a man by how he handles his last drink." "What does mine say?" "That you savor things." She came around the bar, unbuttoned her shirt halfway. "That you don't rush." "I don't." "Prove it." She lifted herself onto the bar, pulled me between her legs. The "CLOSED" sign faced the street. Nobody knocked. She was loud in a way that suggested she didn't care who heard, nails dragging down my back, and when she came she knocked two bottles off the shelf. We both froze. Then laughed. Then kept going on the floor behind the bar, because why stop. At 2 AM she walked me to the door. "Same time tomorrow?" "Last call?" "Last call." She grinned. "But you're buying. And staying." Reader, I closed the bar. She kept the tip.
