The plumber quoted me $400 to fix the sink. She fixed something else entirely, for free. Dana was 32, overalls, wrench, zero patience. "Where's the leak?" "Kitchen sink. Dripping for a week." She crouched under the sink. I tried very hard to look at the pipes. "P-trap's loose. Easy fix. But your water pressure is a tragedy." "Can you fix that too?" "Honey, I can fix anything with the right tools." Twenty minutes later the sink was silent. She stood, wiped her hands. "You know your real problem? Nothing in this apartment gets regular maintenance. Pipes need pressure. Valves need turning." She stepped closer, unzipped the overalls to the waist. Underneath: nothing but a sports bra. "You following me?" "I'm following." "Good. I'm off the clock in ten minutes, and I hate leaving a job half-done." She bent me over the kitchen counter. The wrench clattered to the floor. She was rough and fast and exactly what the apartment needed — full pressure, no leaks, valves fully open. We moved to the hallway wall. Then, ironically, the shower, which she also "fixed," with me braced against the tiles while the water ran cold around us. "See?" she said afterward, zipping up. "Full service." "How much do I owe you?" "The sink was $400." She kissed me. "The rest was overtime. On the house." Reader, I laid pipe. Twice.
