Banks are putting the brakes on AI agents. JPMorgan Chase, Citi, and Bank of America are blocking third-party AI agents from directly accessing customer accounts. On the October 13 earnings call, Jamie Dimon cut to the central issue: liability. If an AI agent acts on your behalf and something goes wrong, who’s on the hook? For banks, the answer is simple: until that’s clear, access stays off-limits. It’s a telling friction point. Managing your money is one of the most compelling uses for AI agents—and one of the hardest places to navigate regulation and accountability. When technology moves faster than the rules for who takes the blame, banks hit the brakes first.
