I drive Didi in China. I once dropped a girl around early 20s working at a KTV, a karaoke lounge with hostesses. She looked so pretty, and clearly new to the job. Halfway through the ride, her phone bell rang. She picked up the phone immediately without even one second delay and didn’t bother hiding the conversation, or perhaps she COULD NOT reject the phone. Therefore I overheard the whole thing. It seemed the phone was from her “mommy” - the woman managing the girls . Apparently, the girl’ d messaged a client from the previous night, asking why he hadn’t tipped her for the service. And the client was confused so he contacted mommy he’d already paid the tip, along with other fees, why would the girl still ask him for that. The mommy went off on her, yelling on the line and blamed the girl why she didn’t follow the process (mommy collects tips on behalf and girls are NOT allowed to contact a client privately for tips directly). The girl was almost in tears, apologizing over and over, promising she’d never add a client’s WeChat again. I felt so sorry for her. But I was just a driver. All I could do was to give her the smoothest ride of her life…
