魏京生基金会新闻与文章发布号:A1761-W1270 In Memory of Mr. Wan Runnan — Wei Jingsheng’s Speech at Commemoration Observing the Anniversary of Mr. Wan Runnan’s Passing 标题:怀念万润南先生 -- 魏京生在万润南先生逝世一周年纪念会上的发言 https://youtu.be/FQ5-itf-MwQ http://www.weijingsheng.org/report/report2026/report2026-10/WeiJSspeech261013rememberWanRunnanA1761-W1270.htm ---------------------------------------------------- In Memory of Mr. Wan Runnan — Wei Jingsheng’s Speech at Commemoration Observing the First Anniversary of Mr. Wan Runnan’s Passing October 13, 2026 It has been a year since Mr. Wan Runnan passed away, and he is deeply missed by all of us. First and foremost, he was a good friend -- the kind of person with whom interacting was a truly pleasant experience. This reflected his character: he possessed the gentle, composed, and refined demeanor typical of people from the region south of the Yangzi River. Even when there was a disagreement, he would win people over through reason rather than engaging in a confrontational clash or simply offering empty agreement. I recall an incident during a protest against the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) at the UN Human Rights Conference in Geneva. While people were discussing the matter in the large café inside the UN building, the representative of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) named Sha Zukang, who was seated at a nearby table to us -- began to provoke us. Our friends immediately retorted. Representatives from other nations nearby also expressed their indignation with remarking, "Do they think they are in Beijing?" At that moment, instead of becoming agitated, Mr. Wan calmly reasoned with them. His words gradually calmed Sha Zukang and his entourage, leading them to depart quietly. It felt as though Mr. Wan possessed a kind of magic, enabling him to resolve the conflict in such a manner. Yet, Mr. Wan was not a man without principles. Indeed, when it came to the big picture, he was more steadfast than most. At the founding of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, some argued against us using anti-CCP slogans, suggesting us to focus solely on democracy and freedom. Mr. Wan and I firmly insisted that the Coalition must maintain an anti-CCP stance, refusing to engage in duplicitous compromises. He was unafraid to offend others or reject wishy-washy approaches for the sake of harmony -- a quality that earned my deep respect. At the same time, Mr. Wan was highly open to differing opinions. During a meeting discussing Falun Gong, he raised a concern shared by many: that Falun Gong’s ideology differed from ours and might eventually become an obstacle to the democracy movement. I argued that despite ideological differences, we were all victims of CCP persecution and should seek common ground while respecting differences, thereby becoming anti-CCP allies. I maintained that even though Falun Gong at that time was only opposing Jiang Zemin, not the CCP itself, the CCP would inevitably force them to turn against the CCP. After some discussion, Mr. Wan changed his view, agreeing that Falun Gong would ultimately become our staunch ally. Moreover, Mr. Wan possessed a grasp of the "big picture" -- a quality often lacking in those who hold leadership positions. When the Federation for a Democratic China (FDC) was in utter disarray during its early days and everyone else had drifted away, Mr. Wan stood firm, shouldering the responsibility of leading the organization’s continued struggle. His steadfast character stands in stark contrast to those who withdrew citing internal infighting as an excuse only to turn around and viciously attack the democracy movement. Mr. Wan once commanded vast financial resources and led the movement through a period of great glory. Yet, when the movement hit a low ebb, he was willing to set aside his status and earn a living by leading tour groups. This ability to adapt to both highs and lows, to rise to the occasion or bend with circumstance, was a true reflection of his personal charisma. I deeply mourn the loss of such a good man, a capable leader, and a close friend. Let us continue to strive for the cause that Wan Runnan left unfinished.
