U.S. Budget Deficit Hits $1.99 Trillion in Fiscal 2026 — Largest in Five Years, Third-Largest Ever The U.S. budget deficit widened to $1.99 trillion in fiscal 2026, up $217 billion from FY2025 — the largest shortfall in five years and the third-largest on record, Treasury Department figures showed Friday. Record receipts of $5.4 trillion were outpaced by record outlays of $7.4 trillion, driven by record debt-service costs of $1.36 trillion and $145 billion in tariff refunds after a Supreme Court ruling struck down much of Trump's tariffs. Defense spending rose 6% to $917 billion, and the deficit-to-GDP ratio reached an estimated 6.2%, up from 5.8%.
