Mount Tai in rime ice ❄️ People usually talk about Mount Tai in big abstract terms — emperors climbing it for 2,000 years to report to heaven, over a thousand inscriptions carved into the rock, UNESCO’s first mixed natural and cultural site in China. All true. But in winter, it becomes something you can actually see. The rock is around 2.5 billion years old. The main path up the south side passes three gates: First Gate of Heaven, Midway Gate, and South Gate of Heaven. The names aren’t subtle. Climbing this mountain was literally the walk to heaven. In winter, the 6,000-plus stone steps turn into a white corridor. The Eighteen Bends, the steepest stretch, look like a ladder hanging in the clouds. Near the top is the Azure Clouds Temple, first built in 1009. The main hall has bronze roof tiles, the side halls iron ones — ordinary tiles simply don’t survive the wind up there. Red walls, icicles on the eaves, incense drifting through the snow. It’s unreal. And the rime isn’t snow. It’s freezing fog. Supercooled droplets hit the branches, freeze on contact, and slowly build into feathers of ice. Peak season is December to February. The stone’s always been there. The ice just makes you look. 🎥 Video by 深蓝色的温度 Xiaohongshu ID: 1109010846 Shared with the author’s permission.
