I just met with an AI engineer at Amazon. It gave me a lot to think about. 1. Amazon seems to be putting more emphasis internally on general purpose AI models than on its coding model team. Perhaps Muse’s success has something to do with that. 2. Apparently, there are rumors circulating internally about cuts to AI development staff. Amazon’s efforts to develop its own models haven’t worked out, after all. 3. Amazon seems to envision physical AI robots in every home, with a demonstration in about three years and commercialization in around five. Honestly, maybe I’m just old school, but I still find that hard to picture. 4. According to my friend, the sweet spot for AI startups right now is virtual training environments, or RL environments. Amazon already uses environments built by startups, but apparently the quality leaves a lot to be desired. This is where a lot of AI developers see an opportunity right now. I heard a few startup names, and I’d invest in them immediately if I could. Anyone want to start a VC fund with me? 🤣 5. My friend is convinced that, no matter how you look at it, compute demand is bound to grow exponentially from here. It sounds like AWS is already stretched thin supporting both Anthropic and OpenAI.
