They signed the DeepSeek ban in July. The public just found out this week. DHS Exclusion and Removal Order #2026-01: every US civilian federal agency must stop buying DeepSeek products and rip out what's already installed, including third-party products built on DeepSeek. Effective immediately. DHS says (their claim, not mine) the models pose "multiple threat vectors," including risk of sensitive data flowing to China and the models themselves possibly containing malware. The line I keep coming back to: the signed order is dated July 24, 2026. Federal Register publication hits today, October 20. That is almost three months of the ban being in force before anyone outside government was told. If you sell software to the US federal government, you now have to prove there is no DeepSeek anywhere in your stack. Supply chain provenance just became everyone's problem. #AI #DeepSeek #AIPolicy
