We must also cherish our values and recognize the importance of what truly matters. Ukraine’s experience of giving up its nuclear weapons in exchange for political assurances demonstrates that purely transactional arrangements, when unsupported by credible capabilities and the willingness to enforce commitments, cannot reliably safeguard sovereignty and peace. It exposes the real vulnerability of values and principles within the international order. International politics is often driven by interests, power, and deals. However, completely disregarding fundamental values, such as territorial integrity and the right of nations to determine their own futures, can lead to a collapse of trust and an escalation of conflict. The long-term consequences of Russia’s violations of its commitments are a case in point. Lasting stability requires combining abstract principles and values with tangible capabilities and credible commitments, rather than relying solely on money, material assistance, aid, or a memorandum on paper. This is not only a reflection on the lessons of Ukraine, but also a perspective worth applying to similar situations involving Taiwan and other regions.
