🇺🇸|My American friends, I'd love to hear your perspective on this. America has been dealing with immigration and cultural diversity for generations. East Asia needs immigrants, yet seems terrified of the cultural changes they might bring. I've noticed growing hostility toward Muslims on Japanese and Korean social media lately. And I find the contradiction fascinating. Japan, South Korea, and China are all struggling with low birth rates and aging populations. Fewer young people want to get married, let alone have children. These countries need younger workers, taxpayers, and consumers to keep their economies going. Yet whenever immigration comes up, so do fears about religion, national identity, and cultural traditions. Muslims make up a tiny minority in Japan and South Korea, but somehow they seem to trigger enormous cultural anxiety. I understand wanting to preserve your traditions and identity. But here's what I find interesting: These societies want the economic benefits of immigration without necessarily accepting the cultural changes that come with it. At what point does cultural confidence turn into cultural insecurity? And can a country truly welcome immigrants while refusing to accept their differences?
