Anthropic just gave away the rulebook for AI agents. Not the agents. Not the models. The paperwork. Agent Skills — the folder-with-a-SKILL.md format that teaches agents how to do specific jobs — now belongs to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation. Name, logo, GitHub org, the whole domain. All donated, Oct 22. The announcement numbers are silly big: 70+ platforms, 1 million skills published, 280 million installs. I've spent this week pulling skill catalogs apart by hand, so here's my read: the format was never the hard part. One was a 10.5KB SKILL.md that turned out to be a router, not a manual — 16 reference docs and 14 scripts hiding behind a friendly description. Another ships 311 skills I will never fully audit. A folder. Some markdown. That is, as one dev put it, the whole trick. The hard part is everything inside the folder — and that part got zero new governance yesterday. Snyk found 76 malicious skills in a single ClawHub sample. The foundation gets the rulebook. Nobody gets a bouncer. Donating a standard is free. The expensive part was never the spec. It's the thousand skills that actually work — and the million strangers writing the rest. Anthropic donated the envelope. The letter is still being written by everyone, including the bad actors. So here's my line: the format war is over, and the winner gave away the trophy. Because trophies were never the product. Skills are. Would you install a skill you haven't read? 280 million installs say most of us already did. I pull these catalogs apart every week — follow along if you audit yours too.
