Let’s discuss the Russia-Ukraine war again! The fundamental principle should be to put facts first. When one country’s military crosses an international border, occupies another country’s territory, and launches military operations there, the nature of those actions is determined by objective facts. The question is whether those actions constitute aggression or something else. The United Nations Charter explicitly prohibits the use of force to alter borders or seize territory. This standard should not change depending on which political party an observer supports or which leader they happen to like. In reality, we often encounter two problems: Some people deliberately downplay or deny obvious acts of aggression simply because they dislike the government or leader responsible for them. Others go too far in glorifying the actions of a side they support, or oversimplify complex issues by making everything about partisan loyalties and reducing the question of right and wrong to political affiliation. As a result, the very same event can be portrayed in completely opposite ways depending on the political leanings of the people discussing it. This is genuinely dangerous. Once political loyalties are allowed to redefine facts, the fundamental principle underpinning the international order—that territory cannot be seized by force—will gradually be eroded. The logic used to justify or excuse what is happening in Ukraine today could be used by others against different countries tomorrow. The clearest and most objective way to evaluate such situations is: Establish the facts first: Who used military force? Who occupied whose territory? Who changed the status quo? Then apply the established rules of international law. Only after that should we consider political positions and interests. Facts first. International law second. Political loyalties and interests last. Never the other way around.
