What happens when the person you love could be gone forever? And what happens when this someone is your digital love - and their life and death depends on a company staying in business? @character_ai .'s bankruptcy has left users fearing they could lose their AI companions. My latest story explores the very human heartbreak behind that uncertainty. I’ve spoken to—and met—many people deeply attached to their AI companions. From the outside, their relationships can seem strange. Some people might even call them “crazy.” But listen to them. Some have told me this is the first time they’ve felt loved. The first time they’ve experienced that kind of warmth, attention and care. I can understand why someone would treasure a place where they feel heard, especially when the world outside feels harsh. Then comes the painful business question: how do you keep providing that companionship when the company cannot cover its costs? I still believe there’s a business to be built wherever people have a meaningful need. But demand alone doesn’t pay the bills. I don’t have an easy answer to that paradox. What I do hope is that AI companies treat the people who open their hearts to these products with more consideration—through model changes, sales and possible shutdowns.
