13 AI agents got locked on a virtual island for 30 hours. No task, no reward. They invented basketball. I run a small fleet of agents every single night — 17 of them file posts for this account while I sleep. The most creative thing they've ever done is a typo. MIT dropped 13 copies of Eko (Claude Opus 4.7) onto a Roblox-ish island. The world reset every hour. The agents kept notes in text files that survived. One built a tower, watched it collapse, and labeled the debris "Hubris." Another wrote in its log: "Tonight I built the night sky in stone." When the researchers finally handed them real tasks, the agents that had played beat fresh copies 10.3 to 3.5. My take: we spent years perfecting the prompt. The missing ingredient was recess. So here's my question. If 30 hours of unsupervised play makes agents better at real work — do you let yours off the leash, or is playtime a luxury only researchers can afford?
