$GFS $MRVL $TSM $INTC $AAPL $GM The fab deal is only one piece of what's being built around GF right now. Part of it goes straight into AI optics. Commerce agreed to move $955 million of GF's existing CHIPS award into silicon photonics, silicon-germanium and advanced packaging in Malta and Burlington, Vermont, which the release calls "increasingly critical to communications infrastructure and data centers." Burlington is where GF agreed on Sept. 17 to add SiGe capacity for Marvell ($MRVL) in pluggable optics, NPO and CPO, on SiGe that already runs 200G per lane, so that money lands right where Marvell's optical ramp needs it. Malta itself is turning into an AI packaging site too. On Oct. 8 GF signed a multi-year $2 billion agreement to make silicon interposers for TSMC's ($TSM) CoWoS advanced packaging, the first US-based source, with volume ramping in the first half of 2028. With the Japan-funded fab coming online in 2029, the same campus gets interposers for AI accelerators plus FDX and BCD capacity within about a year of each other. That also makes Malta a national security asset. Washington now owns a piece of both American-owned foundries: it took a stake in Intel ($INTC) in August 2025, and Commerce gets about 4% of GF under this deal. Breen told investors the fabs reduce US reliance on "geographically concentrated overseas semiconductor supply," and Malta already operates as a Department of War trusted foundry. The buyers are lined up as well. Apple's ($AAPL) COO says it partnered with GF "to produce essential chips for Apple products right here in the United States," GM's ($GM) president called it "domestically owned and operated fab capacity," and Renesas is planning around Malta as "an extension of Renesas' own production footprint." And the demand behind all of this is AI moving past the data center. "Super intelligence is driving extraordinary growth in the data center industry, and now it is moving into the physical world," Breen told the room in Malta, naming cars, factories and the systems that protect us, per the Times Union. "Every one of those runs on the foundational chips we make right here." FDX Fusion, unveiled Oct. 9, is GF's FD-SOI purpose-built for physical AI, with seven-nanometer-class digital performance and production starting in Dresden in 2028, and the Malta fabs are scoped for FDX plus BCD power chips for AI data centers. I'd expect more optical customers to sign onto Burlington as lane speeds move past 200G, the TSMC term to get extended as CoWoS demand keeps climbing, and the "advanced discussion with many more customers" GF mentions to turn into named volume as Malta gets close to tools-in.🔥🔥
