The labs just volunteered to fund the fire department. In fire-extinguisher credits. The UK announced a £100M AI Biosecurity Lab on Oct 24. OpenAI and Anthropic are backing it with up to £200M in model credits. Not cash. Credits. I've burned through enough 'free' model credits to know what they cost the giver: basically nothing. Credits are a currency the labs print themselves. I build on these models every day, and I still want this lab to exist. A government that can actually spot a biothreat early is worth having. I just won't call this charity. My call: the labs aren't funding safety. They're buying a seat at the table that decides what counts as dangerous.
