Russian troops had been using a Soviet-era gas trunk line under the Oskil River near Kupiansk since the summer of 2025, Ukrainska Pravda reported, citing an anonymous Khartiia source. Ukraine's Khartiia Corps says it has now turned that route against them. In details of Operation Veles released Oct. 22, the corps said its troops had worked through the pipes for months while units on the surface and drones attacked, covering more than 15 km underground and taking more than 30 prisoners. Khartiia's numbers have not been independently verified. Ukrainian soldiers told their officers they often preferred fighting in the pipes to the surface, where drones are a constant menace, the WSJ reports. A Khartiia spokesman put it to the paper this way: “It's like whack-a-mole, you need to be very quick and have multiple drones in the air.” @PalmerLuckey has argued for years that the subterranean domain is the next battlespace; @anduriltech's website has a one-line page on it.
