My first connection to @UofIllinois was a textbook, "Data Mining: Concepts and Techniques" written by Jiawei Han and Micheline Kamber. It was in 2007; I was a MS student taking a Data Mining (DM) course taught by Professor Zhi-Hua Zhou (I still remember DM algos like FP-growth and Apriori). It was the best grad course I took and I remembered that university with a super awkward long name through the author on the back cover. In 2017, I interviewed for a faculty job at that very university. Jiawei took me to lunch. I was rather nervous about it because my work had little to do with DM or ML. I ended up feeling guilty about how patient Jiawei had to be to understand my work. Now, in almost another 10 years, CS has become a @siebelschool and the size of faculty and students has almost tripled. But, few people can represent CS @ UIUC better than Jiawei. Congrats for such a distinguished career!
