As someone living in an Islamic country, I have observed that belief in Islam is declining among Gen Z in Islamic countries, while secularization is on the rise. I think the main reason is that religious institutions and politics have become deeply intertwined. In Turkey, for example, religious communities and the institutional religious structure constantly back Erdoğan and portray him as a kind of caliph of the Muslims. This fuels hatred of religious communities among Gen Z and lays the foundation for moving away from religion. Another factor is digitalization. Young people now have access to a vast pool of information, which exposes them to a variety of philosophical views. As a result, they move away from traditional religious approaches and, to a large extent, reform them. I can confidently say that the understanding of Islam in Islamic countries is entering a process of individualization, and that young people who don't want to break away from religion are turning to reformist Islamic views.
