SpaceX just rented $40B worth of GPUs instead of buying them, and I think that tells you more about the AI buildout than any benchmark this week. Apollo buys the gear, SpaceX leases it back for about 5 years, quarterly payments, deliveries starting H1 2027. The chips are Nvidia's Vera Rubin, for what SpaceX calls its terrestrial compute buildout. The CFO's line is the one I keep coming back to: payback in under a year on this infrastructure. If that's true, leasing is just speed. You get the compute now and let the hardware depreciate on someone else's balance sheet. The sharper read is Musk's own warning wrapped around the deal: debt markets have nearly shut for companies without revenue outside AI data centers. SpaceX can sign this because Starlink and launches pay the rent. A pure neocloud can't. The moat here is the second business that pays for the GPUs. Would you own the chips or rent them when the next generation lands in 18 months? #SpaceX #AIInfra Source: https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/26/spacex-locks-in-40b-gpu-financing-deal-with-apollo/
