AI made $0 for 493 companies. Apollo's chief economist just ran the numbers. Take the Magnificent 7 out of the S&P 500 and look at the other 493: 1. Revenue per worker: flat. ~$550K in 2022, ~$550K today. 2. Profit margins: flat. ~10%, same as always. 3. Productivity: no step-change at all. The Mag 7, meanwhile: revenue per worker $550K → ~$800K. Margins near 30%. So the tools work. The business case doesn't. Not outside the seven companies selling the tools, anyway. Slok's line is the one I can't shake: "AI may be a great calculator, but in business, intelligence is mostly judgment." I live inside these tools every day. They made me faster. They did not make me richer. My output doubled, my margins didn't move, and the subscription bill is the one number that goes up every single month. The AI story will be decided in the S&P 493, not the Mag 7. That's Slok's line too. $650 billion is going into the build-out this year. If the other 493 never cash in, that's not a revolution. That's seven companies selling shovels to each other. If your company bought the AI dream, tell me one number that actually moved — your margins, or just your software bill?
