Your iPhone is off. Its Bluetooth chip is still running. That’s how Find My can locate it after shutdown: iOS stops running, while some wireless chips remain powered and continue executing their own firmware. A 2022 study demonstrated that, after gaining privileged access to a device, researchers could modify its Bluetooth firmware to keep injected code running even after iOS shut down. When you slide to power off, it’s easy to assume the entire device has stopped operating. But a phone contains multiple chips that can run independently. What “power off” actually turns off is more complicated than the animation on your screen suggests.
