129,000 stars. The install command has an extra letter in it — and I almost typed the wrong one. I read three trending repos this month and each one tried to fool me differently. So now I run this 7-point smell test before I star anything. Steal it: 1. Age vs stars CleanYourTV hit 42,970 stars in 11 days. Fast is fine — but ask why. It kills ads on your own TV, a pain everyone has. Velocity with no reason is hype. 2. Install name ≠ repo name Graphify's repo is graphify. The PyPI package is graphifyy, double y. Copy the install line from the README, never from memory. 3. The README warns you itself ai-job-search tells you to keep applications in a private repo. Graphify's README says early beta. A README that lists its own limits is a good sign. One that only brags isn't. 4. Vendor benchmarks carry an asterisk PageIndex claims 98.7% on FinanceBench. The strict number in the same eval repo is 90.7%. If the big number needs a footnote, quote the footnote. 5. Forks vs stars ai-job-search, when I read it: 52,648 stars, 17,264 forks. Forks mean people are actually building with it, not just bookmarking it. Stars with almost no forks is a poster, not a tool. 6. Run it before you recommend it My own ledger: iFixAi installed in 33.8 seconds. Sentence Transformers took 27.5 minutes, mostly torch. If I haven't run it, I don't vouch for it. 7. Last commit date A repo can be #1 today and abandoned by Christmas. The date sits right in the repo header. Read it before you star. Stars are a discovery feed, not a review. I star after it passes, not before. What's the most-starred repo you installed and immediately regretted? 🔵 Fellow Premium members, let's connect! I post about AI & tech — follow for more 👥
