Japan’s female prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, has signed an agreement to bring in Bangladeshi workers, with a target of 100,000 workers per year for ten years. This has sparked considerable controversy within Japan. In fact, this reflects a deeper issue. Citizens in developed countries generally enjoy relatively generous welfare benefits and increasingly prioritize personal freedom and spiritual fulfillment. They are no longer willing to engage in low-end, physically demanding jobs. As a result, many developed countries are facing severe shortages of low-skilled labor and have little choice but to recruit workers from less-developed regions. But there is a disturbing reality behind this trend. If this continues over the long term, it could lead to a potentially alarming outcome. Highly educated and highly skilled populations are increasingly reluctant to have children, choosing instead to forgo raising the next generation. Meanwhile, people from less-developed parts of the world are often more willing to endure hardship, work hard, and have larger families. Ultimately, could this lead to large numbers of people from less-developed regions replacing the relatively small proportion of highly intelligent individuals in the world? Could the overall intellectual capacity of the global population eventually decline, representing a step backward for human civilization? This is something worth serious reflection.
