🚊 🇪🇸 Today, I feel deeply disappointed in the country where I was born. I'm currently traveling on the Shinkansen for what must be the hundredth time, this time from Tokyo to Nagano, reflecting on the terrible incident that recently occurred on the Madrid–Seville high-speed rail line. How is it possible that Spain's railway system has experienced so many accidents and breakdowns over the past year? And how is it possible that Japan, a country with constant seismic activity and incredibly complex infrastructure, especially in its major cities, manages to keep trains that have been in service for 18 years in immaculate condition? Trains traveling at over 300 km/h without even a minute of delay (or almost none, except in extraordinary circumstances such as typhoons or earthquakes). Not a single piece of graffiti on any train. Not one damaged component in the driver's cabin. Not a single stain on the velvet seats (which is absolutely unbelievable). Not the slightest vibration. (I have yet to ride an AVE train in Spain that doesn't shake.) And windows so spotless they look brand new. All while transporting 170 million passengers every year. And I keep asking myself: How can we possibly accept this situation? Especially when Spanish taxpayers effectively pay more than 50% of their salaries in direct and indirect taxes? How can we accept the current state of things? How can we accept even a single victim? I simply cannot understand it.
