If You Keep Giving Up, You’ll Slowly Start to Like Yourself Less When I was in school, I had a teacher in her fifties who once shared something in class. After watching generations of students grow and develop, she noticed that those who went on to do better in life all shared one essential quality: Resilience. Now that I’m older, I couldn’t agree more. You have to practice resilience through the smallest things. And I really mean the smallest things. The truth is, whenever you try to accomplish something, whether on your own or with others, things will inevitably go wrong. Sometimes other people doubt you. Sometimes you doubt yourself. We’re not machines. Of course we get discouraged. Of course we feel like backing away. But it’s at those tiny, seemingly insignificant moments that you have to tell yourself: Just keep going. You don’t have to push yourself too hard, but don’t give up either. Even if all you can manage is the bare minimum for now, that’s okay. Just don’t give up. The same applies to things that seem much bigger, like learning English, creating content on social media, building your career, or even figuring out how to live your life. If you push yourself too hard and keep everything stretched to its limit, eventually something will snap. So don’t give up. If you need to, just do the bare minimum for a while. Tell yourself, “I’ll come back to this when I’m ready.” Because in my own experience, things have a way of turning around. Sometimes you’re absolutely convinced that everything has gone terribly wrong. And then, unexpectedly, things start getting better. Life works the same way. I always believe that as long as you’re alive, good things can still happen to you. Do you know why it’s so important not to give up? Because when you keep giving up on things, you may slowly start to dislike yourself. And little by little, you stop trusting yourself, too. That’s why resilience is something worth practicing, starting with the smallest things in everyday life. Keep the promises you make to yourself, even if you can only take one tiny step at a time. (Of course, if you’ve carefully considered something and realized it’s doing you more harm than good, then walking away is absolutely the right choice.)
