Chinese politics is an examination. Even Xi Jinping has to pass one test after another: starting in villages, moving up through towns, counties, cities, provinces, and eventually the nation itself. You want to become president? Then prove yourself through one examination after another. Western politics, by contrast, is one giant party. Let’s celebrate! Let’s see who is the most popular character at this party, and he gets to be our president. Chinese politicians are technocrats skilled at getting things done. Western politicians are prostitutes, actors, and business tycoons. This is the most striking difference between us.
