Humans are social creatures. Throughout history, we had to cooperate in order to survive and propagate our species. Empathy and self-sacrifice are a part of our biological evolution. When we see someone else suffering, the mirror neurons in our brain are activated and we feel a similar discomfort. Rules such as 'do no harm,' 'share,' and 'help one another,' which are brought about by living in a community, existed as survival strategies long before religions became institutionalized. The Golden Rule: Do not do unto others what you would not want done unto you.
